Terry socks factory: cushion knitted into the sole, not added

Terry is a loop structure knitted while the sock is still on the machine. The listed style is a combed cotton crew with a terry bottom, made for running and gym wear.

The listing for this style reads: custom logo spandex and combed cotton sport socks, terry bottom, high tube, running, breathable, non-slip, crew, standard thickness. Sizes are listed as customizable rather than fixed.

The construction

What a terry sock is

A loop yarn held on the sole needles, a boarding form that keeps the loft, and a decision about where the loops stop.

Loop height

Terry is made by holding an extra yarn in loops on the sole needles. The loops are the cushion; the taller the loop, the more cushion under the foot and the longer the sock takes to dry afterwards. That is the trade a buyer is really choosing. On the sample, the sole and the upper are the two faces to compare, because that is where the loop sits; the pair you approve is the reference the bulk run is checked against.

Boarding

Boarding sets the shape once knitting is finished. A terry sole boarded to the wrong foot form loses the loft it had on the machine, so the boarding form is part of the approved sample and the bulk run uses the same form.

Terry placement

Where the terry stops is a decision of its own. A full-sole terry, a heel-and-toe terry and a toe-only terry are three different socks at a similar price band, and the sample records which one you approved.

Yarn pair

Combed cotton with spandex is the yarn pair on this style: cotton for the hand, spandex for the stretch that keeps a high tube on the calf. The blend is confirmed per style on your quotation, not assumed from the listing.

Knitting, boarding, pairing and packing sit in one plant, which is why the form stays the same.

The yarn pair is a listing figure, and the listing gives no fixed size band, so this page does not print one either. What the site does publish is a foot-length chart: size by foot length. Several listed styles on this site carry S/M/L/XL, and on that chart the four bands run from 22.5 cm to 29 cm of foot length, so a terry sock quoted against that grid is quoted against a real range rather than against the word customizable. Send your own grid and yours governs.

Gauge, weight per pair and loop height are not carried as catalogue figures on any style: they are fixed on the signed sample and written on the specification sheet, weight in grams per pair. Loop height and the size band are quoted together, because a taller loop under a longer foot is a different amount of yarn. How the yarn and the weight are fixed.

Questions

What buyers ask about this style

Does terry wash flat?

Terry loses some loft with use, as any loop structure does. How much depends on the yarn and the loop height, which is why both are fixed on the sample and the bulk run keeps to it. Test the pair you approve through the wash cycle you expect.

Full sole or heel and toe?

Both are ordinary. Full-sole terry cushions the whole foot and dries slowest; heel-and-toe terry puts the cushion where a shoe presses and keeps the arch thinner. Your brief names one of the three, and the sample shows it on the foot before bulk starts.

Can a logo sit on a terry sock?

Yes, on the leg or the cuff rather than over the sole. Jacquard and terry are knitted on different needle selections, so a pattern and a terry sole can run on one sock as long as each stays in its own zone.

Why is there no weight per pair here?

Because weight follows the yarn count and the size band, and a number printed here would be wrong for the next order. It is measured on the approved sample and written on the specification sheet that goes with the order.
